Slowing down your thoughtsWhat are you thinking about right now? Is your mind somewhere else? Maybe you are thinking of all the things you have to do tomorrow....or about the fight you had with your partner this morning. In fact... These days we’re always rushed and it seems there are never enough hours in the day. Slowing down your thoughts is not only beneficial to your physical health, it is essential to your spiritual and emotional growth.
The benefitsOur minds are always active, jumping from one thought to another and rarely standing still. Day in and day out, we talk to ourselves, worry, obsess and worry some more, rarely taking time out to just experience life in the here and now. Here's what happens when you meditate: Furthermore, When you make it part of your daily routine, you’ll find that little things no longer bother you like they used to, and you will become calmer, more composed and at peace with yourself and others.
Do I have to be religious to meditate? Not at all. You don’t have to belong to an organised religion or be part of a philosophical group to be able to go within. Anybody can do it, and it’s as natural as breathing. The purpose of meditating is to slow your thoughts down, so you can connect with that wise inner part of you that knows everything, and when you do this, you will begin to find solutions to your problems, as well as building confidence and self esteem. This part is sometimes called the “Higher Self”, “God” or the “Universal Subconscious”. There are many different forms of meditation, and if you are a beginner, don’t worry too much about whether or not you are doing it right. There is no right or wrong way; whatever you experience is okay, and you will notice the benefits if you persevere. One way to meditate is to gently focus on one thing so that it becomes harder for unwanted thoughts to enter into your mind. You might focus on your breathing, or you might want to silently say a mantra to yourself, such as “All is well”. Practising this daily will assist you in building confidence and self esteem, and well as a general feeling of wellbeing.
Simple Meditation Exercise- Sit or lie in a comfortable position.
- Close your eyes and start to concentrate on your breathing. Don’t try to force anything, just allow the breathing to become rhythmic.
- Observe the changes, and don’t worry if stray thoughts come into your mind – just acknowledge them, and then come back to your breathing. Keep doing this, and try not to get frustrated if you drift off and begin thinking about other things. Just gently bring yourself back to your point of focus.
- Start with 5 minutes a day, and then build up slowly. I meditate for 20 minutes each morning and night, and it has become part of my daily routine.
| TIP: Don't let anyone tell you that you are doing it wrong. Nobody "owns" the process of meditation, and there are many different methods, so just do what works for you and above all, have fun doing it! |
