Happiness – what IS it and how can I GET it?

What IS thing called happiness? Who has it and are they willing to sell it? Most of us are so busy living our lives that we see happiness as that elusive ‘thing’ that we will someday have when everything works out for us. But will that day ever come? Let’s dispel some of the common myths about happiness.

When will I be Happy?

Do you see happiness as something far off in the future that you will have one day when everything in your life is perfect? Some people believe that they will only be happy when they get their dream job, live in a nice house, or buy their favorite car. We live in a society that deeply values material ‘stuff’, and so it’s easy to become brainwashed into thinking that the more ‘stuff’ we can accumulate, the closer we will get to being happy.

There's no denying it; we all want it. The search for happiness is one of the basic purposes of human life. On the flip side, the pursuit of happiness can also the source of incredible frustration. I’ve seen clients who have it all – the fancy car, the dream home, money coming out of their ears – but despite all that, they are STILL miserable! Have you ever found that striving for your goals is actually more fulfilling than achieving them?

Sometimes we spend so much time analysing whether or not we are happy that we become even more frustrated and miserable! If this has that ever happened to you, I suggest that you take a step back and focus on the here and now; make a conscious choice to just ‘be’ for a while. Life is meant to be enjoyed, so it’s alright to stop and take a breath. The more you put your life under a microscope, the more things you will find that seem to need ‘fixing’. But remember; if it ain’t broke, you don’t need to fix it.

Pleasure vs Happiness

What is the difference between pleasure and REAL happiness? Personally, I feel like I’m in heaven when I take a bite of my home made tira misu (I don’t mean to boast, but you understand my point...). The point is, all the material things in life can actually give joy and pleasure, but that pleasure is short lived.

Once the novelty of whatever pleasure we are experiencing wears off, we find ourselves back where we started – and searching for the next buzz. In fact, everything in this material world is temporary; if you keep striving for happiness in the material world, you become what the Buddhists call a ‘hungry ghost’ – always trying to fill a hole that can never be filled.

Just take a look at Hollywood – there are many beautiful, rich and famous people who are literally dying inside. They have everything money could buy, are adored by millions and still they turn to drugs and alcohol to numb the pain. Now, I’m not saying that being beautiful and rich will make you miserable; only that it won’t necessarily bring you happiness either.

So true happiness isn’t found by acquiring more and more stuff, but rather in things that money can’t buy. Have you ever met people with limited means that seem more happy than their wealthy counterparts? I know I have. These people have the ability to tap into that wonderful sense of emotional wellbeing, regardless of what is going on around them – now that is worth bottling!

Your Physical Health

It’s really important to stay healthy physically in order to experience happiness. In today's world, people often neglect their health. Lack of physical exercise, unbalanced diet, pollution and stress, all take their toll on our health.

Many people are looking for a quick fix for their health problems – rather than doing what is needed , such as eating properly and getting adequate rest, they instead turn to expensive ‘herbal’ remedies, or even drugs, alcohol, or cigarettes. Happiness starts at a fundamental level with a healthy physical body. To date I’ve never come across anything more effective than a balanced diet and plenty of sleep.

Just as your physical health affects your levels of happiness, it’s equally as important to keep a healthy mind. How you feel about yourself and the world around you has a profound effect on your emotional state. So just as we eat and exercise to keep our bodies healthy, it's also beneficial to feed our minds on a regular basis with strong positive thoughts; reading inspiring books and surrounding yourself with positive people who look after themselves is a great start.

What are YOU here to do?

Have you ever thought that there is something missing in your life? If so, chances are you are searching for your life purpose. When we’re young, the focus is usually around building a career, finding a partner and starting a family.

Once these things are in place, we may find ourselves asking the questions; What else is there? What’s life about? So What IS it all about? I truly believe that we are put on this earth to be happy and to share happiness with others. Ironically, it’s through helping other people to be happy that you will find the greatest happiness yourself.

Think about it; what do you want for other people when you’re feeling happy? You want THEM to feel happy too! Many of us are so disconnected from others that we believe we are completely separate – but we’re not. Everything I do affects you, and vice versa. If you’re at a place in your life where you want something more, start to think about ways that you can serve other people – this might be through volunteer work, expanding your circle of friends or even in a change of career.

Whatever the case, happiness is infectious, and there’s something about taking the focus off ourselves that allows more happiness into our lives. But don’t just take my word for it- try it for yourself!
